Still Alice by Lisa Genova

Still Alice (the book, not the movie even though the movie is based on the book) is a must read. Fair warning, for adults who have already experienced the loss of a loved one to do Alzheimer’s or a similar disease, it can be extra difficult.

Alice is brilliant, successful, and even a tenured professor at a top school. Until a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s derails her picture perfect life. It’s not about the tragedy, though you clearly feel it. The journey is captivating from the very beginning as Alice comes to terms with her change in circumstance.

Genova does a fantastic job of depicting the loss of mental control coupled with Alice’s anxiety over what she is losing. I admit to shedding more than one tear as I experienced Alice’s losses. This one hits a little close to home on a few points. But, it is worth the read.

The Verdict on Still Alice

Again, this is a must read. There are laughs as well as tears. And, the book is always better than the movie.
